What Dentistry Challenges Does My Dentist Treat?
Plaque, Tartar, and Bacteria
Foods and drinks can leave behind sugar on your teeth that encourage bacteria to grow. When bacteria get out of control, they create a clingy film called plaque. These bacteria also make acid that damages the surface of your teeth, leading to cavities and other problems!
Tartar is a form of plaque that has hardened from calcium and other minerals when plaque is not treated in time. You’ll have trouble cleaning it with a toothbrush alone.
But with cleaning tools, our team can remove both plaque and tartar to help protect your teeth from damage.
Tooth Cavities and Fillings
Cavities are pits or holes in the surface of teeth. They can cause:
- Pain during biting
- Visible tooth depressions
- Sensitivity to sweet foods and drinks
- Sensitivity to high or low temperatures
- Unexplained toothaches
- Darkened tooth surfaces
Do your teeth hurt? That’s often a signal to schedule a dental checkup. However, cavities sometimes don’t cause pain, because they’re not near a nerve.
Either way, we’re glad when we catch them and can use a filling to replace the damaged tooth material, prevent the cavity’s spread, and strengthen the tooth.
Gingivitis and Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Gum disease is caused by bacteria multiplying on your gums. About half of Americans have at least mild gum disease. The earliest stage is “gingivitis,” and it’s more common as we get older.
To manage gum disease, you need regular dental checkups. Our team can quickly identify signs of gum disease.
During professional gum cleaning, we repair damaged gums using scaling and root planing. This helps gums reattach to your teeth and start growing again. We can also clean and reshape gums with our LANAP and LAPIP laser protocols, which we’re certified to use. We’re one of the only practices in all of Utah to do these procedures!
Toothaches
Is one of your teeth hurting without an apparent cause? This may stem from:
- Infection: Bacteria growing in or near a tooth.
- Abscess: A swollen tissue inside a tooth.
- Gum Disease: An infection in surrounding gums.
- Cracks or Breaks: Deep damage to the tooth structure.
- Cavity: Small holes in the tooth surface.
We’re experienced in treating all causes of tooth pain. We might fill your cavity, repair a crack in the tooth, clean your gum infection, or clean an infection inside your tooth. We’ll keep you comfortable through and relieve that pain.
Tooth Chips and Cracks
A tooth chip appears when a small piece of a tooth has broken off. It can cause:
- A sharp edge that can damage nearby tissues
- Tooth pain, aches, or sensitivity
- Infection
A tooth crack is a break in the surface of a tooth. A piece of tooth has not broken off, but the tooth surface is damaged, which can lead to pain, a loose tooth, further tooth damage, and more.
In either case, we can repair your tooth! Your dentist may use dental fillings, bonding, and/or a crown to reinforce and protect your tooth, also making it look great.
Tooth Appearance
The way our teeth look affects us every day. It’s important to you! We have solutions for:
- Tooth Discoloration: We offer professional tooth whitening.
- Tooth Spacing: Get minor spaces changed with bonding or veneers.
- Tooth Size: We can control the apparent size of a tooth with veneers or crowns.
- Chips: Your dentist can smooth out a chip or even replace the material with bonding.
- Tooth Misalignment: Using veneers or bonding, we can change the apparent alignment of teeth.
Get a beautiful smile with general and cosmetic dentistry services combined.
Mouth Sores
Soft tissues in the mouth, such as the gums, can develop sores—inflamed, damaged areas in the tissue—including:
- Canker Sores: Non-contagious sores caused by a combination of factors.
- Cold Sores: Blisters caused by a viral infection.
Some sores are temporary, though they may be painful, causing difficulty while talking and eating.
If a sore persists longer, your general dentist may be able to help. We’ll look for the cause of the sore first. Treatment might include medication, repairing a tooth, controlling an infection, or removing the sore.
Impacted Teeth
An impacted tooth is one that hits against, or impacts, an obstacle while it is growing. It might press against another tooth, your jawbone, or the back of your mouth. Not every impacted tooth is a problem, but some cause pain, infection, gum disease, tooth misalignment, and/or tooth damage.
A dentist can treat an impacted tooth by:
- Guiding its growth with an appliance
- Extracting the tooth
- Using orthodontics to reposition teeth
Catching an impacted tooth early is vital for treating it successfully—another reason to schedule regular checkups.
Tooth Erosion
Tooth erosion is the process of losing tooth surface material, or enamel, over time. It can be caused by acids in food and drink, stomach acid, bacteria, accidents, or teeth grinding.
Signs of tooth erosion can include:
- Tooth pain
- Tooth discoloration
- Shiny tooth surfaces
- Tooth chips and cracks
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
- Loose teeth
Your dentist can improve the strength and appearance of your teeth using:
- Treatment to remineralize your tooth surface
- Bonding or fillings to repair chips, cracks, or cavities
- Veneers or crowns to protect teeth
Oral Cancer Screening
During regular checkups, we can perform oral cancer screening. In only a few minutes, we’ll look for symptoms of several types of carcinoma, including the most common types that make up 90% or more of all cases.
Oral cancer can cause:
- White or red patches
- Bumps or lumps
- Persistent sores
- Loose teeth
- Pain while chewing
Catching oral cancer early in its development is great news. It means that you have more time to seek treatment.
Get screened more often if you are at risk because of alcohol use, smoking, or a family history of oral cancer.
